Abstract

New developments, improvements to existing applications, and case histories of automation and process instrumentation and technology implementation in wastewater treatment systems have been reviewed. A publication of the workshop proceedings on wastewater instrumentation, control, and automation represented a comprehensive account of recent developments. A summary of the performance history of computer control systems serving water and wastewater treatment plants was presented. PLCs were selected for monitoring and control of water and wastewater systems in Henrico County, Virginia. The control of pH in various wastwater treatment applications was discussed. The comparison of the influence of continuous and purged automatic sampling systems on nitrification occurring in the BOD test in nonnitrified final effluent was evaluated. Additional studies and applications are cited in the paper.
