Abstract

Novel binuclear ferrocene derivs., with bulky ligands, were examd. as potential combustion modifiers in composite (ammonium perchlorate-hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene-based) propellants, esp. with respect to migration during storage. Of the ferrocene derivs. tested, Catocene migrated ∼30% more than 2,2'-bis(butylferrocenyl) propane of 1,1'-bis(ethylferrocenyl) pentane. The bulky ligand-contg. ferrocene derivs. had combustion activities similar to those of Catocene (at the 1.5 wt.% treating level), and had no effect on propellant workability and mech. properties.
