Abstract

This article presents the results of an investigation centered on analyzing the influence of learning-service practices on the development of personalstudent and social competencies of university students, and their reasons for taking part in a learning-service project. The study took as its axis of inquiry this project, developed by university teachers in a secondary school student residence. The case study was used as research methodology and document analysis, observation, and interviews as information gathering strategies. The results helps confirm the incremental nature of competencies, the diverse reasons the persons involved gave, and the resulting effects on the acquisition and development of personal-student and social competencies. Based on the findings obtained, we conclude that learning-service creates a pedagogical setting appropriate for the acquisition and development of competencies.
