Transient osteoporosis of the hip: A case report

Abstract

Transient osteoporosis of the hip (TOH) is a benign, self-limiting disease and should be considered in the differential for sudden onset of hip pain, especially in pregnant females and middle-aged males. Early diagnosis is imperative to distinguish it from osteonecrosis. MRI is the diagnostic modality of choice. Treatment is usually conservative; however, antiresorptive agents may be used. We present a case of a middle-aged male with TOH of the left hip, who responded rapidly to calcitonin nasal sprays.
