Abstract

Electricity is generated by hydropower, a significant renewable energy source, in more than 150 nations throughout the world. Given its ability to meet the rising need for power while lowering carbon dioxide emissions, hydropower's sustainable growth is of the highest significance. With improved monitoring, optimization, and assistance for more effective and sustainable operations, the Internet of Things (IoT) opens up new opportunities for the sustainable growth of hydropower. River levels, turbine efficiency, and cloud cover are just a few of the different aspects of hydropower generating that may be tracked using IoT sensors and devices. The efficiency of the plant may then be increased by optimising output, cutting waste, and reducing downtime using the data that has been collected. This lessens the possibility of power interruptions and enables hydropower plants to adapt more quickly to variations in energy demand. Hydropower plants can have a smaller negative influence on the environment because to IoT technology. Water quality, heat, and other vital characteristics may be monitored using ecological surveillance devices to make sure that hydropower activities do not have a harmful effect on the nearby ecosystems. The system can also assist in reducing the likelihood of dam breakdowns and floods by monitoring fluctuations in water volumes and anticipating possible dangers. Improved control of electricity storage and transportation is another benefit of IoT implementation in the hydropower industry. Energy may be conserved during times of little need and supplied during peak times by using IoT-enabled smart grids, which eliminates the need for peak power plants that burn fossil fuels. This encourages the production of more environmentally friendly electricity and lowers overall carbon emissions.
