Abstract

Critical study of the Library area of literature. Information Science and Sociology for reflection of the social role of the public library in contemporary times, in order to identify and analyze their role as cultural mediator and information. Reflecting on cultural mediation, their social and conceptual implications, is located the public library as a social space that action to carry out the mediation of information. Discussing the possibilities of public library operations, says its transformative potential to represent a space for meeting and amid dialogue and cultural diversity of technological devices, diversifying the mode of production and circulation of cultural goods, going to be characterized as a kind of "emporium of ideas", which should also allow the comfort of the user's residence. Concludes that the public library today is invited to rethink their role as information mediation space that both preserves the social memory and provides the conditions for creativity and cultural production, ensuring the respect for difference is the engine of social role and respect and citizenship.
