Abstract

Most of the denominations of coastal morphological features have their origin in the terms used in English and French. In the more specific case of beaches and their undersea extension towards the inner continental shelf there are inadequacies such as the translation of backshore from English to pós-Praia in Portuguese. In the submarine segment, the definition and subdivision of the shoreface, regarding its subdivision and extension is also controversial. In view of the inadequacies and conflicting subdivisions, it is proposed to replace the denomination pós-Praia with Praia proper, and the subdivision of the shoreface (antePraia in Portuguese) into two segments characterized by its slope and intensity of the morphodynamic processes in upper and lower shoreface.
