Abstract

The chapter briefly reviews the principles of experimental stress analysis with strain gauges and by photoelasticity, and the materials which may be used for the models. It gives the basic concepts of the dimensional theory, and specifies scale ratios appropriate for models made from plastic materials, such as perspex or plexiglass, and for models made from micro-concrete. Most of the chapter is devoted to a comprehensive account of model tests undertaken in conjunction with the design of tall buildings. This contains descriptions of 44 tests undertaken by 23 organizations in 12 countries. Photographs of 23 of the tests are included. Refs.
