Abstract

For purposes of this discussion solvents are considered to be liquid organic compounds that are used to dissolve and reduce the viscosity of various resins and other materials. Emphasis is on solvents for use in surface coatings. Topics include: origin and growth of solvents industry; methods of manufacture of solvents; solvent properties and their effect on properties of solutions; air quality regulations; formulation of solvent blends; and solvents for high-solids coatings.
