Abstract
Healthy hooves with good quality horn and ideal hoof conformation form the basis for a healthy horse that can achieve high performance levels. Morphometric measurements of the hoof are used to survey normal hoof shape and to quantify deviations from it. They assist in identifying poor hoof conformation and in planning, implementing and controlling corrections as well as diagnosing hoof-related diseases such as laminitis. The accuracy and reproducibility of these measurements are influenced by the radiographic technique used and the procedure of taking the measurements themselves. The basis for taking measurements from radiographs of the horses hoof is a thorough preparation. Precise, consequently at the same anatomical landmark, placement of the markers and performing of the measurements is crucial. When interpreting the parameters it has to be kept in mind that they have unequal clinical relevance and statistical variability and that the breed and height of the animal significantly influence the measurements. The wider the range of normal values the more difficult it is to distinguish between normal and abnormal values. A comprehensive assessment of coherent measurements allows an accurate evaluation of the condition of the hoof. The aims of this review of literature are to describe standardised radiographic techniques, to evaluate the most important morphometric parameters regarding both their likely accuracy and clinical relevance and to give an overview of published reference values.
