Abstract
Agroforestry systems for animal husbandry in Brazil, including integrated crop-livestock-forest systems (ICLF), are very diverse, and present several technical, environmental and socio-economic benefits. For each of the country's 5 regions (Southeast, Central-West, North, Northeast and South) the prevailing agroforestry systems holding animals are presented, their potential and constraints discussed and research needs identified. In general, such systems are not broadly adopted, mainly because of their level of complexity compared with traditional systems, as well as some lack of understanding by farmers regarding their benefits. To change this situation, in the last 5 years, the Brazilian Government has allocated finan-cial resources in terms of credit for development as well as for research and technology transfer addressing ICLF systems, including good agricultural practices and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to improve competitiveness of the Brazilian agribusiness sector.
