Abstract

ABSTRACT Gelang Village, particularly Lanasan Hamlet in Jember Regency, is an underdeveloped area where the community relies primarily on seasonal work as tea/coffee pickers at PT Perkebunan Nusantara XII plantations and cattle/goat farming. Accumulation of unutilized livestock waste (±800 kg per day) causes environmental and health issues, including air pollution, disease vectors, and foul odors. This community service program aims to: (1) Implement a low-cost communal bio-digester to produce biogas as an alternative cooking energy source; (2) Process biogas fermentation byproduct (bio-slurry) into Liquid Organic Fertilizer (POC), compost, and organic pesticides; (3) Enhance economic income through livestock waste management. The partners comprise community groups in Lanasan Hamlet. Implementation methods include: (a) Construction of an 8×2×2 m balloon-type biogas reactor; (b) Technical training on bio-slurry processing; (c) Mentorship on formulating POC, compost, and organic pesticides; (d) Digital marketing training for derivative products. Key outcomes demonstrate: (1) Biogas replaced 1–2 3-kg LPG cylinders per household weekly, reducing conventional energy dependence; (2) Bio-slurry was utilized as fertilizer for horticultural crops and elephant grass for livestock feed; (3) A sustainable partnership with the Teaching Factory of Animal Feed at Politeknik Negeri Jember ensured regular POC and compost supply, increasing community income. The program contributes positively to energy resilience, environmental sanitation, and local economic strengthening. Sustainability is maintained through operational guidebooks, digital marketing channels (@lowcost.biogas), and institutional synergy with vocational education. Keywords: Communal biogas, livestock waste utilization, digital marketing, rural renewable energy, circular economy
