Abstract

In the field of high energy physics (HEP) experiments, the requirements to detector components are becoming more stringent due to the higher rate environment and higher energy accelerator available in the near future. Among various detectors, photon detectors are well known to be superior in terms of response time and dynamic range. A photomultiplier tube (PMT) is one of such devices with very high gain and low noise performance. Recently, we have developed a new type of PMT with fine mesh (FM) dynodes [1–7] who have exceptional performance in time response and linearity with high gain even under magnetic fields. The PMTs are available not only as conventional single-anode, but as multi-anode reads-out [8–11] with very low cross-talk. In this paper, their characteristics are discussed in detail. © 1993 IEEE
