Abstract

The traditional linear production model applied in the fashion industry, based on extracting, producing and wasting, brought with it serious negative consequences on the environmental, economic and social level. As a challenge, the so-called slow fashion movement arises, with the ultimate objective of introducing sustainability in the textile sector. In this way, the transition to the implementation of a circular economy model begins, which implies substantial changes, both on the side of the suppliers and the demanders. The objective of this work is to develop the basic pillars on which the alternative circular economy model is based. The results show that the use of sustainable textile fibers, the use of renewable energy sources, the lengthening of the period of use of the garments and an adequate management of the waste generated constitute the four pillars of this new model. Among the conclusions, the great impetus that the current concern of the public authorities for the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda can be highlighted for its implementation. Likewise, for this model to flourish, an integrated educational program for consumers and industry is essential.
