Abstract
In this chapter, we define the reaction rate and a few associated terms, and introduce the simplest type of chemical reaction—single step reactions known as elementary reactions. We investigate the various factors that determine the rate of an elementary reaction, and introduce simple collision theory, a basic model for calculating rate constants and explaining their temperature dependence.
