Abstract

Recently, Artificial intelligence (AI) appears as a disruptive technology to enhance smart grid technologies, it has become an essential element of power management, distribution optimization, fault detection, and demand response control. By using AI approaches such as machine learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning, smart grids are getting smarter, and are achieving better efficiency, robustness and sustainability. By leveraging these technologies, a power grid can predict required power loads, predict faults in real time, and adaptively incorporate environmental-friendly renewable energy sources. In spite of these developments, many challenges still persist, such as data privacy, cyber theft, high operating and maintenance (O&M) cost, and shortage of skilled manpower. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive review of literatures on the application of AI in smart grid from both technology advances and methodologies aspects. It reads and interprets the simulation results and case studies to learn best practices and possible failures. This study highlights the importance of collaboration across the technical, policy and social sciences communities to build resilient infrastructures. It also calls for ongoing AI innovation and good policy-making that optimises our smart power solutions. In summary, AI led smart grids are crucial for modeling intelligent and sustainable cities with resilient power supply and energy efficient operations, so this book is of value to academia, practitioners and decision makers during the next era of industrial revolution.
