Abstract

A model of a failure in sport is considered, with special reference to failure by those who may fail & their others. qualitative materials from professional baseball & football are examined with reference to reactions to failure, & variations are assessed in terms of the differences in social organization of these 2 sports. baseball allows for movement vertically through the system--upward, or downward & out. football provides for horizontal access within the system. the degrading treatment of the failure as a deadman & nonpersonage vs the arts of consolation found in the cooling-out process would reverse themselves were the available mobility within the 2 sports to change. modified ha
