Abstract

The objective of this article is to investigate the impact of retirement on the wages of older men over 65 years of age in Brazil using data from the 2010 Demographic Census. A joint decision model of labor supply and retirement was estimated to control the selection bias in the wages that are used to calculate the income differential between retirees or not. The main result indicates that the retirement reduces the wages of older people, especially the less educated who are less likely to get into better occupations. Thus, the permanence of the retired in the labor market may be motivated to supplement the income and the postponement of retirement could improve the situation of the older men in the labor market
