The article presents the competitive intelligence (CI) practices in various countries with a brief comparison on the CI practices in South Africa. An assessment on the status quo of CI practices in different countries, highlighting the CI's role in the fulfillment and competitiveness in business decision making is considered. Specifically, the CI practices of Japan, Sweden, Israel and the U.S., which were known as leaders in such practices are ascertained. Details on the achievements of these countries through practicing CI are given emphasis with comparison to South Africa's CI performance. Further information on the aspects that may affect CI practices, as well as CI's potential role in enhancing the competitiveness of a country are included.
