Abstract

Previously, researchers have investigated the topography of the grinding process, but the majority of the investigations undertaken have been through the application of 2-D characterisation. To more fully describe the nature of the surface and to relate its character to the functional requirements of the surface, three dimensional visualisation and characterisation is necessary. A new software package has been developed and it has been used to investigate the topography of the ground surface. The software allows for considerable data manipulation which has enabled lower level surface effects to be exposed and analysed to aid the understanding of surface generation mechanics. © 1989 CIRP.
