Abstract

The finite-element technique is used to obtain the numerical solution of the equations describing the motion of water droplets in an airflow around a cylinder. The solution of the nonlinear partial differential equations using a Newton-Raphson iterative procedure yields the droplets velocity field. This approach gives the local impingement efficiency at the cylinder surface, from which the total collection efficiency is found by numerical integration. Results are compared with those obtained by Langmuir using an analog computing device. -from Authors
