Abstract

Background: This review explores the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in audiology, with a particular emphasis on hearing aid technology and speech rehabilitation. The discussion is framed through two complementary lenses. Technical lens: This review traces machine learning’s evolution in hearing science, from algorithms that improved diagnostics and sound processing to today’s integrated AI systems. It analyzes how these systems transform hearing aid fitting, noise reduction, and speech therapy. Starkey devices serve as a key case study for deep learning applications in environmental adaptation and health monitoring. The analysis extends to comparative features across leading manufacturers, including cloud-based personalization and intelligent connectivity. Philosophical lens: Through a philosophical lens, this review critically examines the ethical and professional implications of integrating AI into hearing care. It addresses core issues of patient autonomy, trust in algorithmic recommendations, and the evolution of the audiologist’s role from technology gatekeeper to collaborative partner. Special consideration is given to AI’s potential in personalizing speech rehabilitation. Inspired by judo strategy, the paper proposes frameworks to redirect professional and patient resistance into constructive adoption, positioning AI as an empowering tool. The ultimate aim is to guide the responsible and balanced integration of technological innovation with human-centric care. Objective: The objective of this review is to critically examine the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in hearing rehabilitation, with a particular focus on hearing aid technologies and speech rehabilitation. Using the judo strategy as a conceptual framework, this review explores how perceived threats posed by AI, such as clinician concerns about professional obsolescence and patient preference for AI-driven self-education, can be transformed into collaborative momentum that strengthens clinical practice. Conclusion: Artificial intelligence is reshaping hearing rehabilitation by enabling greater personalization, efficiency, and adaptability, while simultaneously reinforcing the essential role of clinicians. Guided by ethical responsibility and patient-centered care, audiologists can apply the principles of judo: agility, balance, and strategic leverage, to transform challenges into opportunities. When implemented under professional oversight, AI becomes a trusted ally that enhances therapeutic outcomes, strengthens clinical decision-making, and ensures that technological innovation and human expertise operate in harmony.
