A ANTROPOLOGIA EM PORTUGAL E O ENGLOBAMENTO DA CULTURA POPULAR

Abstract

Este artigo explora alguns aspectos do desenvolvimento do campo de estudos da cultura popular em Portugal. Usa como contraponto o caso brasileiro, onde essa tradição se desenvolveu no quadro disciplinar do folclore, pensado como distinto da antropologia. Em Portugal, embora essa tradição tenha começado por ter um recorte substancialmente folclorista, no sentido em que privilegiava o estudo da literatura e das tradições populares, expandiu-se depois a outros domínios, como a arte popular, a cultura material ou organização social das comunidades camponesas. Tal processo foi acompanhado por uma definição sucessivamente mais abrangente do campo de estudos da cultura popular como pertencente à etnografia, à etnologia e à antropologia cultural. Assim definido, esse campo de estudos foi não só importante no processo de institucionalização da antropologia em Portugal, por intermédio da universidade e do museu, como repercutiu também em desenvolvimentos mais recentes da antropologia portuguesa.This article explores some aspects of the historical development of the studies of popular culture in Portugal. It uses as its counterpoint the Brazilian case, where a similar tradition gave rise to the discipline of Folklore, which remained distinct from Anthropology. In Portugal, despite its folklorist beginnings, the interest on popular cultures was able to expand to other domains, such as folk art, material culture, or the social organization of peasant communities. Such a process was accompanied by a disciplinary definition of the study of popular cultures as belonging to the fields of Ethnography, Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology. Thus defined, the study of popular cultures was not only important in the processes of institutionalization of Anthropology in Portugal, but has also had an impact on more recent developments in Portuguese Anthropology.
