Abstract
This paper focuses on the introduction of reinforced concrete, in three signifi cant public buildings in Santiago de Chile, as a contribution to the history of the introduction of this material in Chile. Th e text analyzes the role played by reinforced concrete as an artifi cial material, as well as its links to the scientifi c and technical development of the building industry. Th e analysis considers material and productive conditions, technical and institutional actors and economic and social conditions. Special emphasis is given to signifi cant public buildings as related to the centennial celebrations, specifically those for the Museum and School of Fine Arts, the Courts of Justice and the National Library.
