Abstract

Hypercalcemia is a common problem in dogs that can lead to multiple organ dysfunction and substantial renal damage. Detection of a high serum calcium concentration in a dog prompts intensive efforts to rapidly identify the cause of the hypercalcemia. Double-phase scintigraphy of the parathyroid glands using technetium Tc 99m sestamibi can correctly identify parathyroid adenomas in dogs with primary hyperparathyroidism. Sestamibi scintigraphy could be applied as an important early test for the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia in dogs.
