The militarization of Brazilian prisons This paper analyzes the presence of military police in Brazilian prisons, their distribution in the federal units and the main characteristics of the establishments where they operate. In addition to a bibliographic review, the methodology covered descriptive statistics and regression analysis, based on information from the National Penitentiary Information Survey. It was found that military police act in 23% of prisons and in 18 Brazilian states. Among the characteristics of the prisons where these professionals are present, the following stand out: they have a more diversified staff, do not have overcrowding and register fewer visits to prisoners.
