Abstract

This article seeks to trouble the art materials and practices that are often found in early childhood education (ECE) spaces. It situates its discussion of a children's art encounter within the worlds of neoliberal capitalism entangled with technocultures of whiteness. Certain bodies and subjectivities are produced through these systems, revealing how power adheres in local phenomena. For example, these systems circulate through art in the ECE classroom. The article presents new ways of mapping these complex political worlds. It is hoped that engaging and confronting ECE arts within these worlds will provide spaces, without any easy escapes or solutions, for educators to grapple with these complexities.
