Rhythm in Cinema: An Analysis of the Movie Raging Bull

Abstract

The phenomenon of rhythm in cinema is one of the important factors that play an important role in shaping film language and aesthetics, and the viewer's thoughts and experience of a movie. Rhythm, which emerges as a result of the collaboration between different members of the film team such as the director, screenwriter, editor, cinematographer, and sound designer, guides the audience through the story and provides a road map to make sense of the meaning and emotional intensity of the film. This study aims to reveal how the elements that constitute rhythm in cinema are constructed in the film Raging Bull (1980). In the literature section of the study, the elements that determine rhythm and rhythm in cinema and how they are constructed in cinema from past to present are explained with examples from world cinema. In the light of the information given in the literature section, the film was divided into sequences and the elements that make up the rhythm, cinematography, editing, and sound and music design were analyzed. As a result, it is seen that the elements that make up the rhythm form the rhythm in a structure that serves the whole in a fragmented manner and that the rhythm has an important role in the creation and strengthening of the film not only formally but also narrative, aesthetics, and film language.Sinemada ritim, film dili ve estetiğini, seyircinin bir filme ilişkin düşüncesini ve deneyimini biçimlendirmede önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Yönetmen, senarist, kurgucu, görüntü yönetmeni ve ses tasarımcısı gibi film ekibinin farklı üyeleri arasındaki iş birliğinin sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan ritim, seyirciye hikâye boyunca yol gösterir ve filmin anlamını ve duygu yoğunluğunu anlamlandırmak adına seyirciye bir yol haritası çıkarır. Bu çalışma sinemada ritmi oluşturan unsurların Raging Bull (Kızgın Boğa) filminde nasıl inşa edildiğini ortaya koymayı hedeflemektedir. Çalışmanın literatür bölümünde sinemada ritim ve ritmi belirleyen unsurların neler olduğu ve geçmişten günümüze nasıl inşa edildiği, dünya sinemasından verilen örnek film ve sahnelerle açıklanmıştır. Literatür bölümünde verilen bilgiler ışığında film, öncelikle sekanslara bölünmüş ve ritmi oluşturan unsurlar olan sinematografi, kurgu, ses ve müzik tasarımı kategorileri altında çözümlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak filmde ritmi oluşturan unsurların parçalı biçimde bütüne hizmet eden bir yapıda olduğu ve ritmi inşa eden biçimsel özelliklerin filmin temposu manipüle ederek film dramatik yapısını, estetiğini ve film dilini güçlendirdiği tespit edilmiştir.
