Abstract

This report describes the evolution of the current procedure of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for identifying emerging risks in the food chain by reviewing and appraising achievements since the inception of EFSA. In particular, the report addresses the evolution of the conceptual definition of emerging risk, developmental steps of the procedure, and the main results of the piloting phase. The report concludes with a proposal for a way forward to improve the current emerging risk identification procedure.
