Abstract

Fraudulent measures are a growing issue in the insurance industry, costing billions annually and eroding consumer trust. This chapter explores how artificial intelligence (AI), with unparalleled accuracy, speed, and scalability, transforms fraud detection, prevention, and mitigation. Traditional rule-based systems struggle against complex fraud schemes like staged accidents and synthetic identity theft. AI-driven techniques, leveraging machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and graph analytics, analyze vast datasets in real time to detect patterns and uncover hidden fraud networks. Case studies highlight AI's impact, including Lemonade's AI reducing false claims by 75% and European insurers integrating blockchain for transparency. Challenges such as algorithmic bias and GDPR compliance require interpretable AI frameworks. Future advancements, including generative AI and blockchain-IoT integration, will enhance fraud resilience. Ethical governance and cross-sector collaboration are essential to ensure fairness, accountability, and inclusivity.
