Abstract

This study explores the intersection of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) practices and employee behavior within higher education institutions (HEIs) in Pakistan, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities in a developing country context. It aims to assess the impact of GHRM practices on environmental and social performance, moderated by institutional type (Private vs. Public). A quantitative was employed, using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The study focused on Pakistan (Sindh and Punjab) based HEIs to provide geographical specificity. The moderation analysis revealed that institutional type significantly influences the relationship between GHRM practices and social performance. The interaction between institutional type, green work engagement, and green organizational culture significantly impacts environmental and social performance, highlighting the importance of considering the institutional context in evaluating GHRM effectiveness. The study is limited to HEIs in Karachi, Pakistan. Future research could explore other potential moderators or mediators that may further elucidate the dynamics of GHRM practices in the higher education sector. This study contributes to the theoretical understanding of GHRM in higher education and offers practical insights for global policymakers and educational leaders in similar contexts.
