The gyroscope: An elementary discussion of a child’s toy

Abstract

An elementary discussion of the gyroscope is presented. It is based on convservation of angular momentum and energy and does not require calculus. The results are identical with those obtained with the usual Lagrangian–Euler angle treatment. The motion is then analyzed graphically, and conditions under which the top falls are considered.
