Abstract

Historical reports of seismic liquefaction during the 1901 Cheviot earthquake in northeast Kaiapoi as well as soil conditions at the site, determined by rotary boring and penetrometer tests are documented. Penetration testing results confirmed reports that there is significant risk of liquefaction. Four more reference sites have been identified, each with slightly different soil conditions, whose performance can be monitored following future earthquakes in the region.
