Abstract
In the last few decades, the soring increase in obesity and its association with other chronic pathologies has given urgency to the search of therapeutic measures different from the restriction of caloric intake and/or the introduction of lifestyle changes. Drugs have been used to help lower the caloric intake or to increase the caloric expenditure. The alternatives have been from drugs that inhibit appetite to drugs that diminish the intestinal absorption of lipids, or that increase the thermogenesis in the adipocytes of the deposits. Since obesity is a disease, it must be managed for life; thus, it is necessary to make sure, beyond any doubt, that it does not produce any adverse effects in the long term.
