Abstract

The study was conducted from April to May 2011 and aimed to obtain information about the diversity, stand structure and carbon content of mangrove forests, the Resort Bedul Alas Purwo National Park, East Java. The plot is made in three different places repeated in three times and the size of the sub-plots was 10m x 10m. The results showed that in nine miles along the riverine mangrove, it was recorded thirteen types of vegetation, namely, Rhizophora apiculata Blume, Rhizophora mucronata Blume, Bruguiera gymnorhyza (L) Savigny, Bruguiera cylindrica W.et.A., Avicennia marina L, Avicennia officinalis L., Cordia bantamensis Blume, Xylocarpus molucensis L., Xylocarpus granatum Koen., Heritiera littoralis Dryand. Aiton., Sonneratia alba Griff., Sonneratia caseolaris (L) Engl., and Luminitzera littorea Voigl. Four types of stands are dominant namely: B. cylindrica with a density of 1,367 trees/ha, R. mucronata with a density of 1,033 trees/ha, A. officinalis with a density of 167 trees/ha and X. moluccensis density 167 trees/ha. Seedling stage are dominated by R. mucronata with the density of 2,500 stems/ha, while for the sapling stage on all the plots are not encountered. Biomass and carbon content at the sites are dominated by R. mucronata of 117,89 tonnes/ha (58.94 tonnes C/ha, the carbon dioxide uptake of 216,93 tons CO2/ha), and by of B. cylindrica 63.55 tons/ha (31.77 tonnes C/ha equivalent CO2/ha 116,59). A. officinalis 18.99 tonnes/ha (9.49 ton C/ha equivalent 34.83 CO2/ha), and X. moluccensis of 6.92 tonnes/ha (3.46 ton C/ha equivalent 12.70 CO2/ha).
