Abstract

In this chapter we review the research on the associations between 1) trauma exposure and physical health problems and 2) PTSD and physical health problems. Evidence supporting the hypothesis that PTSD mediates the relationship between trauma exposure and physical health functioning is summarized, and the theory of allostatic load is introduced. Strategies for providers and clinics to use in addressing the specific needs of service personnel and veterans with ongoing medical problems and PTSD are offered.
