Recording the Unimaginable

Abstract

Reviews the book, Overcoming the Past, Determining Its Consequences and Finding Solutions for the Present edited by M. Zaurov and K.-B. Gunther (2009). This book is framed as a tribute to Deaf German Jews from that era, but it also contains papers on deaf individuals and communities in Germany, Finland, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Britain, Israel, Sweden, and the United States. Papers on social integration, identity, philosophy, and genetics are also included. The scope of the whole volume is broad, and one hopes that, in the company of the Holocaust presentations, these other papers will not be overlooked. It should become an important source book for students in at least two fields: holocaust studies and deaf studies.
