The article describes qualitative, social justice-based case study research undertaken between late 2004 and 2006 with four Pakeha primary teachers of Maori children, and with children from those classes and their parents/whanau in New Zealand. The study aimed to gather insights about what characterizes effective Pakeha primary teachers of Maori students. It also explores the reasons for the under-achievement of Maori students.
