Abstract

This article examines different methodological procedures, and especially the research techniques. It characterizes both the traditional and the new strategies of social research that are used within the context of the information society. The author emphasizes the impact of incorporating the new computing and communication technologies in the bibliographic and documental research, as well as the field research. Furthermore, the article questions the dichotomy of quantitative and qualitative approaches, considering its complementarity and interfaces. The paradigm of complexity in the epistemological perspective shows considerable progress, but as an operating methodology it is still in its initial stages. In this sense, the study addresses the issue of triangulation, designed as a promising procedure in the search for the quantitative-qualitative approach. Considering the arguments, the author intends to explore further into the characteristics of the procedures and technical resources that can be used by researchers seeking to develop joint research projects. © 2009 Programa de Pós-Graduação em Sociologia - UFRGS.
