Limnoecology: The Ecology of Lakes and Streams

Abstract

Limnoecology is a sub-discipline of ecology which studies inland aquatic realms. The authors emphasize this relationship not only by the newly-coined word of the title, but also by taking the empirical data in their book entirely from limnology in order to advance more general ecological theories. Thus the book covers all the key issues of limnology while its structure and underlying concepts conform to ecology. It is designed for use in both fields with equal success. Beginning with chapters on the link between ecology and evolution, and the methodology of eco-research, the study goes on to introduce the physico-chemical properties of freshwater habitats. It ends with a presentation of ecological structures in the clasic progression individual--population--interactions among populations--communities--ecosystems.
