Abstract
Ninety cases of laryngeal cancer, treated between 1982 and 1993 at our hospital, were investigated retrospectively. The ratio of male to female was 9:1. There were 51 cases originating in the glottis (56.7%), 31 in the supraglottis (33.4%) and 7 in the subglottis (7.8%). According to the UICG TNM classification system (1978), 34 cancers were stage I (37.8%), 19 (21.1%) stage II, 20 (22.2%) stage III and 17 (18.9%) stage IV. The overall five-year survival rate was 59.6%. The five-year survival rates for stage I to IV were 93.8%, 70.8%, 39.2% and 24.5%, respectively. The successful radiation control rate for primary glottic tumors in stage I was 92.0%. In advanced cases, more aggressive therapies, such as combinations of irradiation and chemotherapy with surgery, appear to be required. © 1994, The Society of Practical Otolaryngology.
