Abstract

DURING the past 40 years various theories have been advanced to explain the large rise in rate of respiration, that is, the 'climacteric' rise, which accompanies ripening in certain fruits1-8; but no hypothesis has yet been accepted as proved. © 1962 Nature Publishing Group.
