Vernacular choreography: a shield of culture in contemporary times

Abstract

The declining engagement with social spaces and cultural symbols threatens the survival of local cultures, necessitating immediate intervention. This research examines the role of performing arts, particularly vernacular choreography, in preserving local cultural heritage within communities. The study employs qualitative data sourced from online platforms, with YouTube serving as a primary documentation resource. Findings reveal that vernacular choreography innovatively utilizes existing social spaces for artistic performances, acting as a strategic tool for cultural preservation amid modern societal challenges. The use of social spaces and cultural symbols in vernacular choreography contributes to safeguarding local cultures through three key mechanisms. First, it showcases the cultural richness of communities by integrating space, symbols, and traditional practices. Second, it revitalizes local culture by incorporating traditional movements, literature, and artistic expressions. Third, it facilitates the transmission of cultural knowledge, values, and practices to younger generations. These insights offer valuable guidance for policymakers and cultural stakeholders in developing strategies to sustain and manage local cultures, ensuring their continued relevance in contemporary society.
