Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to examine current junior high school English textbooks in Taiwan to see how the design of the tour language skills & cultural information fits students need. Five different publishers provide the Ministry of Education (MOE) with approved junior high school English textbooks. A review of the literature on related research was consolidated to form a detailed evaluation form for the live series of textbooks. Two raters were involved in the grading & commenting on the design of the textbooks. Users' opinions, including those of teachers & students, were also collected through interviews & surveys. The raters' grades were analyzed by two-way ANOVA (4x6 & 4x5) & one-wad ANOVA. The results were tested by Sheffe's post hoc test to see the differences among the factors. The major finding in this study is that all the examined textbooks put much emphasis on listening, speaking, & reading, but less on writing. All textbooks provided practice of integrated skills & of culture & customs. However, more instruction could he provided in the area of language learning, strategies. Finally, some suggestions tier school teachers & textbook designers are provided. Adapted from the source document
