Abstract

Abstract: Statistical estimates of the relationship between the characteristic sizes and lifetime of polar lows (PLs) are obtained using the Sea Surface Temperature and Altimeter Synergy for Improved Forecasting of Polar Lows (STARS) data for 2002–2010. The features of their nonlinear relationship are noted. A model explanation of the power and exponential (linear in the simplest case) relationship for the largest-scale and longest-lived PLs is proposed.
