Abstract

Although the terms “start-up” and “new economy” were first synonymous with novelty and excitement, they now seem anachronistic. Why therefore should we still be talking about these phenomena? This paper examines the main mechanisms used by a supposedly fun-oriented management to stimulate the mobilization of employees of Internet companies. It shows how the development of the new economy revealed and emphasized new ways of conceptualizing our relationship with authority, with work, and with ourselves. As a sort of laboratory in which “new workers” are created and a mirror of “new individuals” seen as autonomous, mobile, and unsettled, start-ups are perfect applications of a post-disciplinary organization, that is, a horizontal, reticular, and de-localized organization. Autonomy and responsibility incite, constrain, and control workers. The governing principle of start-ups is a diffuse form of technological control and power within the company, such that every employee is at the same time free and bound: free to decide but forced to plan and work. This aspect of start-ups will probably be the one that survives the longest since it offers efficient modes of domination—and of legitimating that domination—to those who hold the power in firms.
