Abstract
In recent decades obesity has been increasing reaching epidemic proportions worldwide. Portugal ranks fourth among the countries in Europe with the highest prevalence of obesity, with a large number of women of reproductive age. It is therefore important to consider the influence / importance of body weight on the safety and efficacy of contraceptive methods and the choice of method during periods of diet, medical treatment and after obesity surgery. The Portuguese Society for Contraception and the Portuguese Society for the Study of Obesity propose effective and safe strategies for contraceptive counseling in overweight, obese women, obese undergoing medical therapy for obesity and after bariatric surgery.
