Abstract

In this study, glycerol was used as plasticizer for the preparation of thermoplastic starch (TPS) from arrowroot starch (AS). Samples with different contents of glycerol (10, 20, 30 and 40 %wt) were prepared by extrusion technique. The properties of TPS were tested by analysis method. The FTIR, SEM and XRD data showed that the structure of arrowroot starch completely changed after extrusion process with the presence of glycerol at high temperatures. TPSs were plasticized and the relationship between plasticization degree and TPS properties was characterized and described by mechanical properties. The experimental results also showed that the tensile strength slightly decreased and the elongation at break significantly increased with the increase of the degree of plasticization.
