Abstract

This book is the product of a symposium held at the University of New South Wales in March 1991, organised by the Royal Zoological Society of NSW. It consists of 22 separately authored contributions, 13 of which are abstracted individually (AI) in Ecological Abstracts: official attitudes to western New South Wales (faunal especially) 1901-1993; efficient agricultural practices, a dilemma; land classification and conservation planning for fauna (AI); vertebrate pests versus wildlife conservation in NSW (AI); faunal changes in the Western Division of NSW since the first explorers (AI); survey plans and what happened to western NSW when Europeans arrived (AI); dietary competition and the extinction of macropodids (AI); neglect and future rehabilitation of NSW mammals (AI); ecological stability of NSW; habitat reduction/frgmentation in WA central wheatbelt (AI); NSW bird fauna (AI); historical changes in NSW bird fauna (AI); waterbirds - the future (AI); NSW frogs (AI); reptiles and amphibians - status in Western Divison of NSW (AI); human impact on freshwater fish; review of NSW invertebrate research (AI); the recovery of the Western Division; development of a landcare philosophy; epilogue; and a summary of the 1901 Royal Commission. -S.R.Harris
