Strategies to promote academic integrity in an educational center in A Coruña (Galicia)

Abstract

Numerous studies show that academic plagiarism is present in the university sphere and requires attention at pre-university stages. This article provides a theoretical reflection on academic integrity, academic plagiarism, and the role of teaching and administrative staff in educational institutions in promoting it, also presenting the results of a study conducted in a Primary and Early Childhood Education Center in the city of A Coruña (Galicia, Spain). The objective was to approach a school institution to understand the reality of this issue in the Primary Education stage, which includes children aged six to twelve, through a focus group with eight teachers and an interview with the principal of the center. The results obtained reveal a diverse conceptualization of academic plagiarism, as well as a growing awareness of the shared responsibility between management and teachers in preventing such behaviors. Avoidance strategies are identified, and the need for greater specific training, as well as the development of clear and applicable regulations in educational institutions, is highlighted. The conclusions emphasize the importance of addressing this issue from an early age, promoting a culture of integrity.
